Guidelines for Information About Therapy Experiments (GIATE)

What is the need?

Developing a new antibody-based therapeutic or imaging agent requires validation of the scientific concept, optimisation of conditions in appropriate assays, establishing a basis for safety and the design of execution of clinical studies. This process results in large amounts of information acquired by different scientific groups and is commonly complemented by information from outside sources. The National Cancer Institute Translational Research Working Group has published pathways to guide this activity but there is an unmet need for a reporting guideline for experimental data. GIATE addresses this need; it is a minimum information guideline consisting of a structured list of information elements describing the range of information required, along with a controlled vocabulary to ensure consistency and clarity of meaning.

GIATE provides:
  • a consistent information framework
  • support for sharing data within and between disciplines
  • a guide for description of experiments
ο helping to avoid unnecessary duplication
   ο supporting comparison between experiments
ο facilitating identification of incomplete information
ο identifying issues of risk and safety

  • consistency in communicating:
   ο research plans
ο work flow within multidisciplinary and multisite groups
   ο presentations to funders
ο publications in journals and databases
   ο with drug regulatory bodies
  • a basis for machine analysis of data after formalising relationships of data elements in ontologies

How does GIATE relate to other reporting guidelines?

GIATE is included in the Minimum Information for Biological and Biomedical Investigations (MIBBI) project which coordinates the development of these guidelines or checklists across the different biological sciences domains. In order to provide improved access to these minimum information checklists, MIBBI maintains a web-based portal with summary information, links and complementary information about them. Additional resources include data formats, controlled vocabularies, ontologies, tools and databases. Additionally, MIBBI coordinates the development and harmonization of the Minimum Information (MI) specifications. This process is important to ensure that integration of data complying with different MI specifications is possible.

GIATE-TAB is a downloadable spreadsheet providing the GIATE framework to use with your own data. To see and use the spreadsheets, log into the gmail account using the credentials above. After logging on:

1) Click “Documents” (Tab at the top of the page)
2) Click “Collections shared with me” (left side of the documents page).
3) Click “Public” (middle of page)
4) Click “Data” to view blank GIATE template and two example data sets. For the examples, scroll through the pages using the tabs at the bottom of the page.
All these documents can be edited only after they are downloaded to your own machine.
a) Right-click any document and pick the download option to save them onto your drive.
b) Alternatively, open each document and select the “Download As” option from the “File” tab.
5) Click “Forms” to view and download component GIATE templates.
6) Click “Publications” to view and download papers related to GIATE.

*** You can share GMAIL documents with collaborators by allowing them access either
a) via your (or group) GMAIL user name and password OR
b) via their own GMAIL account (by editing the sharing settings for each document). Please email us for more details (giate@ucl.ac.uk)
